Tasting notes
A blind tasting of the One.6 chardonnay and One.9 merlot pitted these newcomers against three moderately priced competitors. The question was whether these especially low-carb wines would stand out in some way because of their level of carbohydrates. They did not.
Although the One.9 merlot emerged as the top scorer overall and the One.6 chardonnay came in second among the whites, there is little for these wines to boast about.
Bottled by Brown-Forman's Stonybrook Vineyards, located in California's Mendocino County, One.6 and One.9 were compared against chardonnays and merlot from Sutter Home and BV Coastal Estates, whose makers have promoted both lines as meeting the federal government's low-carb criteria. Serving as controls, were a chardonnay from Geyser Peak and a merlot from Canyon Road.
Carb and calorie counts were supplied by the winemakers and are per 5-ounce serving. Consumers counting carbs need to remember: The government's low-carb standard is an interim ruling and there's a debate over the correct way of measuring carbs in wine.
Chardonnays
2002 Geyser Peak Chardonnay Russian River Valley. An interesting first impression: buttery oak enriched with notes of cooked fruit and a smooth, soft finish. Some tasters complained it was too oaky. 3.1 grams carbohydrates, 122 calories. 2 corks. $13
2003 One.6 Chardonnay. Throws an initial punch of light, bright sweetness before settling down into a genial and undistinguished tartness. 1.6 grams carbohydrates, 120 calories. 1 cork. $10
2002 Beaulieu Vineyards BV Coastal Estates Chardonnay. Creamy and with a touch of sweetness at first, the wine rapidly thins out on the tongue. 3 grams carbohydrates, 124 calories. 1 cork. $9
2001 Sutter Home Winery Chardonnay. Tasters complained this was too demure a wine, with little fruit aroma and thin flavor. 3.8 grams carbohydrates, 120 calories. 1 cork. $6
Merlots
2002 One.9 Merlot. A pleasant chewy texture, hearty flavor and spicy peppery finish help make this merlot stand out. 1.9 grams carbohydrates, 125 calories. 2 corks. $10
2002 Canyon Road Merlot. Tannins lend structure to the fruit and give the wine a dry finish. Yet one taster complained the wine is vapid; another said it falls off into nothing. 3.3 grams carbohydrates, 119 calories. 1 cork. $10
2002 Sutter Home Winery Merlot. A mellow if rather one-note pour that offers some fruitiness and spice. 4.1 grams of carbohydrates, 119 calories. 1 cork. $6
2001 Beaulieu Vineyards BV Coastal Estates Merlot. Thin, dry, with little sign of fruit and a very subdued finish. 3.5 grams carbohydrates, 126 calories. 1 cork. $9.
