Effect of Fat Sources and Fat Blends on Starter Pig Performance
Five week trials in 2 phases (1st 2 weeks and following 3 weeks after weaning), utilizing a total of 324 weaning pigs (21+ 3 day) were conducted to determine the effects of different fat sources and combinations on starter pig performance.
Addition of fat to starter rations has been shown to enhance performance of weaned pigs. Research conducted at Kansas State University has demonstrated that the magnitude of the fat response is related to the source of fat and specific blends of fat. Thaler et al. (1988) compared the growth and feed efficiency of pigs (age=21 days) fed rations containing no added fat (control) to the performance of pigs fed rations containing either soybean oil, coconut oil, choice white grease, ½ soybean oil: ½ coconut oil or ½ choice white grease: ½ coconut oil. Fat supplementation improved the performance of pigs during the combined five week trials as compared to controls. Pigs fed rations containing ½ soybean oil: ½ coconut oil consumed more feed than pigs fed either coconut oil or choice white grease diets, and gained faster than pigs fed rations containing coconut oil and the daily feed intake was elevated.
